The Biden administration has provided Egypt with $1.3 billion in military aid to help facilitate a ceasefire in Gaza.
According to Reuters, Secretary of State Antony Blinken informed Congress that he waived conditions on the aid, which were related to Egypt’s human rights record, citing U.S. national security interests.
A U.S. spokesperson explained:
“This decision is crucial for advancing regional peace and addressing Egypt’s key role in U.S. national security priorities, including securing a Gaza ceasefire, bringing hostages home, increasing humanitarian aid for Palestinians, and working towards a lasting resolution to the Israel-Hamas conflict,”
The spokesperson also emphasized the ongoing dialogue with Egypt regarding the need for tangible improvements in human rights, a vital element for maintaining a strong U.S.-Egypt partnership.
Despite criticism over Egypt’s alleged human rights abuses under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi—such as torture and enforced disappearances—Egypt remains a key U.S. ally.
President Sisi has denied accusations of holding political prisoners.
He has stressed the necessity of stability in a country that has faced repeated Islamist militant attacks.
The ongoing Gaza conflict, which escalated after Hamas’s October 7th attack on Israeli civilians, has increased the U.S. administration’s reliance on Egypt for diplomatic efforts.
This includes ceasefire talks.
Egypt’s shared border with Gaza also makes it a crucial channel for delivering humanitarian aid to the region.
