Elon Musk Being Investigated After Post About Biden, Harris and the Second Trump Assassination Attempt

Elon Musk is under investigation following a controversial post he made in the wake of the second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Shortly after Sunday’s incident, Musk posted a now-deleted message on X (formerly Twitter), where he appeared to question why no attempts had been made on the lives of President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.

“And no one is even trying to assassinate Biden/Kamala,” Musk wrote, ending the comment with a thinking emoji.

In a follow-up reply to his own post, he added, “Well, one lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X.”

The post was eventually deleted, but it still caught the attention of government authorities.

The White House quickly responded, condemning Musk’s remarks.

Andrew Bates, a spokesperson, emphasized that “there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country,” adding that it is “irresponsible” to make jokes or comments that could encourage violence.

In addition to the White House’s criticism, the Secret Service confirmed they were investigating Musk’s comments.

A spokesperson for the agency told the U.K.’s Independent, “The US Secret Service is aware of the social media post made by Elon Musk, and as a matter of practice, we do not comment on matters involving protective intelligence.”

The agency did, however, reaffirm that it “investigates all threats related to our protectees.”

Beyond the government response, media outlets and commentators also took aim at Musk.

Wired suggested that Musk’s post “could be interpreted as a call to murder President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris” and labeled him “a national security risk.”

Silicon Valley investor Roger McNamee, speaking on MSNBC, argued that Musk should face legal consequences, noting that Musk’s involvement in key defense projects makes his comments particularly problematic.

While the Secret Service is right to investigate potential threats, it’s clear that there are larger national security concerns than Musk’s comment.
