A bankruptcy judge has approved the liquidation and auction of Infowars, the media platform owned by Alex Jones, to help pay more than $1 billion in damages owed to the families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
The auctions, expected to begin in November, are part of a broader effort to collect funds from Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems, which was placed into bankruptcy earlier this year.
In June, a bankruptcy trustee filed an emergency motion to shut down Infowars and Free Speech Systems, citing the need to liquidate its assets.
The decision to auction off Infowars’ assets follows a federal judge’s earlier ruling that ordered the liquidation of Jones’ personal assets as well.
Judge Christopher Lopez, overseeing the case, has now approved Jones’ request to convert his Chapter 11 business reorganization bankruptcy into a Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy.
Despite the looming liquidation, Jones has vowed to continue his show using alternative platforms, such as social media or a new website.
He suggested that supporters could potentially purchase Infowars’ assets, allowing him to continue his work as an employee of the brand under new ownership in Austin, Texas.
ABC News reported that Infowars’ intellectual property, including its trademarks, copyrighted material, social media accounts, and websites, will be auctioned starting November 13.
However, Jones’ personal social media accounts, such as his X (formerly Twitter) account, which boasts 2.8 million followers, are not part of the initial sell-off.
The trustee overseeing Jones’ bankruptcy case, Christopher Murray, indicated that he may seek court approval to also liquidate Jones’ personal social media accounts and other intellectual property in the future, a move that could spark further legal battles.
Murray is also expected to sell various personal assets belonging to Jones.
This financial reckoning for Jones stems from his long-standing promotion of false conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook shooting, in which he claimed the 2012 massacre was a hoax.
His statements led to multiple defamation lawsuits filed by the families of the victims.
A Connecticut judge previously ordered Jones to pay an additional $473 million in damages, on top of the $1 billion he was already required to pay following jury verdicts in 2022.
Jones filed for personal bankruptcy protection in December 2022, shortly after the Sandy Hook verdict.
The families had initially sought a staggering $2.75 trillion in damages, in addition to the $1 billion in compensatory damages.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Jones has maintained that the defamation lawsuits are an attack on his First Amendment rights.
He has also expressed regret for his false claims about the Sandy Hook shooting, acknowledging that he was wrong and had been misled by disinformation.
In December 2022, he stated: “I admitted I was wrong. I admitted it was a mistake. I admitted that I followed disinformation but not on purpose. I apologized to the families. And the jury understood that. What I did to those families was wrong. But I didn’t do it on purpose.” However, these apologies have not been enough to shield him from the substantial financial consequences of his actions.
