The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed an explosion at the Santa Maria Courthouse in California, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident, attributed to an “intentionally set improvised explosive device,” has prompted swift action from local authorities and raised concerns over public safety.
According to Raquel Zick, the public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, the courthouse was quickly evacuated following the blast.
Despite the severity of the situation, only two people sustained injuries, both of which are non-life-threatening. Zick provided regular updates through social media, including a post on X, where she announced that a person of interest had been detained in connection with the explosion.
The individual, described as an adult male, is believed to have been responsible for planting the explosive device inside the courthouse.
“Subject who is detained is an adult male. The explosion was from an intentionally set improvised explosive device,” Zick stated in her social media update.
Details about the explosion are still emerging, but initial reports suggest that the suspect entered the courthouse and threw a bag in front of Department 9, which then detonated.
This account was corroborated by Superior Court Executive Officer Darrel Parker, who shared the information with a local news outlet.
Law enforcement agencies responded quickly, cordoning off the area around the courthouse to ensure public safety and facilitate the ongoing investigation.
While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, authorities are treating the case with the utmost seriousness, given the deliberate nature of the explosive device.
