Bragg Won’t Oppose Request to Delay Trump Sentencing

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has submitted a motion indicating that he will not object to a request from former President Donald Trump’s attorneys to postpone the sentencing in his hush-money case. However, some speculate that Bragg’s decision may be politically influenced.

According to the Washington Examiner, the left-leaning prosecutor’s office has announced in a filing that they will not contest Trump’s legal team’s request to delay the scheduled sentencing hearing on September 18th.

This decision comes after a significant ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, granting presidents absolute immunity from official acts performed while in office, which Trump’s lawyers argue includes the hush money payments to Stormy Daniels.

In June, Trump was found guilty on 34 felony charges related to orchestrating payments to benefit his 2016 presidential campaign and falsely categorizing these payments in business records.

Prosecutors under Bragg stated in their filing to Judge Juan Merchan that they will not provide a sentencing recommendation, potentially involving imprisonment.

“The People defer to the Court on the appropriate post-trial schedule that allows for adequate time to adjudicate defendant’s [presidential immunity] motion while also pronouncing sentence ‘without unreasonable delay,’” prosecutors wrote, according to the Examiner.

“The Supreme Court’s recent decision did not consider whether a trial court’s ruling on that distinct evidentiary question is immediately appealable, and there are strong reasons why it should not be. Nonetheless, given the defense’s newly-stated position, we defer to the Court on whether an adjournment is warranted to allow for orderly appellate litigation of that question, or to reduce the risk of a disruptive stay from an appellate court pending consideration of that question,” the filing — the second in as many months from Bragg in not opposing a sentencing delay — added.

The letter from Bragg’s office was described as a blatant and obvious endeavor to prevent Trump from facing legal consequences, all the while trying to prevent public sympathy for the Republican nominee, who narrowly survived an assassination attempt just a month prior.

Subsequently, President Joe Biden has withdrawn his bid for reelection, opening the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to be formally selected as the Democratic Party’s nominee at this week’s national convention in Chicago.

Current mainstream polls indicate that Harris and Trump are now neck and neck, marking a notable improvement from Biden’s recent decline in popularity.

Kevin O’Leary, a star investor on “Shark Tank” and Chair of O’Leary Ventures, raised concerns about the potential harm to the U.S. economy due to the efforts led by Democrats to convict and possibly imprison Trump.

During an interview with “Fox & Friends” in June, O’Leary outlined his views on how Trump’s unprecedented criminal trial in Manhattan could affect the economy.

“I would ask everybody, regardless of your politics, to think about the big picture and what America means to the rest of the world. It’s the largest economy on Earth. It has the best legal system, including the appellate system, which now Trump will go through. And if there’s something wrong with his trial, it wasn’t done properly, the appellate system will catch it. That’s what people believe about the American legal system,” O’Leary began.

He continued by expressing his concern that “disparaging” a former president during legal proceedings could severely damage the reputation of the United States.
