A tragic incident occurred Thursday afternoon in Letcher County, Kentucky, when Sheriff Mickey Stines fatally shot District Judge Kevin Mullins inside the judge’s courthouse chambers, following an argument, according to a report from The New York Times.
The Kentucky State Police confirmed the details during a Thursday evening briefing.
Sheriff Stines, 43, turned himself in after the shooting and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Trooper Matt Gayheart, speaking on behalf of the Kentucky State Police, said authorities received a 911 call just before 3 p.m. reporting gunfire at the Letcher County Courthouse in Whitesburg, a small city about three and a half hours southeast of Louisville with a population of around 2,000.
First responders arrived on the scene to find Judge Mullins, 54, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save his life, the county coroner pronounced Mullins dead at the scene.
Gayheart explained that a preliminary investigation suggests the fatal shooting followed an argument between Stines and Mullins inside the courthouse.
Sheriff Stines was taken into custody without incident and has been cooperating with investigators.
“This community is small in nature, and we’re all shaken,” Trooper Gayheart said, reflecting on the impact the incident has had on the local population.
He added that authorities are still working to understand what led to the argument and are interviewing witnesses who were in the courthouse at the time of the shooting.
Gayheart also emphasized that it was an isolated incident and posed no ongoing threat to the public.
In response to the tragedy, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear expressed his condolences on social media, noting the prevalence of violence in today’s world.
“There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow,” Beshear wrote.
State Attorney General Russell Coleman also issued a statement, announcing that his office will collaborate with Commonwealth’s Attorney Jackie Steele, who will serve as a special prosecutor in the case.
Coleman vowed to fully investigate the incident and ensure justice is served.
Judge Kevin Mullins had been serving in the 47th Judicial District since 2010, according to Ballotpedia.
He was also recently appointed to a state judicial commission on mental health, highlighting his commitment to addressing critical issues in the justice system.
Sheriff Mickey Stines, who was first elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022, is now at the center of an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
As the community grapples with the shocking incident, authorities are working diligently to piece together what transpired in the moments before the fatal encounter.
