More than 1,000 people are reported missing in Buncombe County, North Carolina, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
Officials confirmed Sunday that at least 30 people have already been found dead, with that number expected to rise in the coming days.
In an emergency meeting, local authorities revealed the alarming toll and announced ongoing rescue operations and the setup of emergency medical shelters.
They also launched a special website to help locate the missing, noting “more than 1,000 reports so far,” according to one official who spoke during the livestreamed session.
Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller expressed the dire situation, stating that collapsed roads, damaged infrastructure, and widespread flooding were making it nearly impossible to reach many stranded residents.
“We’re doing the best we can,” Sheriff Miller said, describing the overwhelming challenges facing rescue crews.
Many of those unaccounted for are believed to be people without electricity, preventing them from contacting loved ones.
However, the grim reality suggests that some of the missing may be among the growing death toll. Buncombe County, which includes Asheville, has already confirmed 30 of North Carolina’s 36 reported fatalities due to the hurricane, a number Governor Roy Cooper warned will likely increase.
“We know there will be more,” the governor said during the briefing on Sunday.
Rescue teams have been working around the clock, saving over 40 people in the Asheville area, including an infant.
North Carolina Adjutant General Todd Hunt said that a combination of 911 calls and social media pleas have guided emergency workers to those in need.
With roads blocked and communication lines down, helicopters have been deployed to airlift essential supplies to isolated communities.
As of Sunday, Hurricane Helene has claimed at least 89 lives across the southeastern United States and left millions without power.
The storm first made landfall in Florida on Thursday before moving northward, leaving a path of destruction across Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.
Among those affected was Katie Pate of Fairfax, Virginia, who lost contact with her parents, who live near Asheville.
She turned to social media for help after her father called to say he was setting up a generator, but then went silent.
“I was watching the situation in western North Carolina get worse, but all I could do was sit and wait,” Pate said.
After a tense 24 hours, Pate finally heard from her parents, who explained that fallen trees had cut off roads, and power was down across the county.
Her parents, both 75, managed to cut their way through the debris with a chainsaw and reach a nearby inn, the only place in town with cell service.
“People don’t realize that even if you get someone on the phone, you can’t always reach them. Everywhere is cut off,” Pate added.
Sadly, not all stories had a happy ending. In Texas, Jessica Drye Turner posted a desperate plea on Facebook, asking for help for her family stranded on their rooftop in Asheville.
As floodwaters rose, her family members watched vehicles float by, but help didn’t come in time.
In a heartbreaking follow-up post, Turner revealed that her parents, both in their 70s, and her 6-year-old nephew had drowned when the roof collapsed. “I cannot convey in words the sorrow, heartbreak, and devastation my sisters and I are going through,” she wrote.
