In the ABC News presidential debate on Tuesday night, a Fox News focus group monitoring voter reactions revealed that independent voters were predominantly in agreement with Republicans regarding former President Donald Trump’s position on immigration.
During the debate, Trump took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris and the Biden-Harris administration, criticizing their approach to immigration policies and linking the surge in crime to illegal immigration.
Trump’s assertion that the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies and the increase in “migrant crime” are damaging the nation’s foundation seemed to strike a chord with both Republican and independent voters.
The focus group, comprising seven Democrats, five independents, and five Republicans, was observed through dials denoted by distinct colored lines: red for Republicans, yellow for independents, and blue for Democrats.
As Trump addressed illegal immigration and its influence on crime rates, the yellow line representing independent voters surged dramatically, crossing over the red Republican line.
The surprising convergence of these two groups captured the interest of Lee Carter, the head of focus group analysis at Maslansky + Partners.
Of course the media schills will say Kamala won BUT Independents tracked with Trump and Republicans the entire night on insta tracker as just revealed on the Faulkner Focus. We have to remember MOST POLLS only sample Democrats and Republicans while INDEPENDENTS are the LARGEST… pic.twitter.com/hbGVROSnHV

“I was really, really surprised because the intensity of the independent support was there for Donald Trump, and I didn’t expect it,” Carter said Wednesday on The Faulkner Focus. “Independents are tracking very much with Republicans. They’re looking for answers on immigration, they’re looking for answers on the economy. They want to hear that things will get better for them, and they also want change from what is happening right now.”
A New York independent voter who took part in a voter panel on Wednesday highlighted the increasing worries about immigration in his city.
“You don’t have to look any further than the five boroughs to see the impact of the migrant crisis,” the voter said. “When asked directly by the moderators, Kamala didn’t even make an effort to defend the administration’s policies at all. She can’t. It’s indefensible, so she pivoted… but they totally rewrote all of Trump’s immigration policies in year one. I would’ve liked to have seen an explanation for the country as to why they did that.”
During the debate, Carter highlighted additional topics like fracking, abortion, and the economy where independent voters appeared to be more in line with Republicans than Democrats. Harris Faulkner, The Faulkner Focus host, emphasized that the dial results indicated the importance of the GOP focusing on independent voters who could have a significant impact on the upcoming election.
“I think the independents are tracking this way with Trump’s responses because it is obvious what’s happening across the country in these cities,” said one GOP voter from New Jersey. “Every single day we’re seeing destruction… crime… every single day our safety is being compromised, and I think you can’t hide from that, and I think it’s becoming more and more obvious and something needs to change.”
Although independent voters expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, all three voting blocs—Republicans, independents, and Democrats—demonstrated robust support for Trump’s discussions on tax cuts and economic revitalization, which were central to his previous administration.
“I’m going to cut taxes very substantially and create a great economy like I did before,” Trump said, drawing applause from across the focus group.
The debate results underscore the increasing worries of independent voters, especially on the topics of immigration and the economy, where Trump appears to be making headway.
The convergence of views between Republicans and independents on these issues may become crucial as the 2024 election approaches.
