An assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, allegedly by a radical supporter of Ukraine, occurred just days after Vice President Kamala Harris falsely claimed that Trump had encouraged Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine.
During a recent debate, Harris accused Trump of supporting authoritarian leaders, stating:
“It is well known that he admires dictators, wants to be a dictator on day one according to himself. It is well known that he said of Putin that he can do whatever the hell he wants and go into Ukraine. It is well known he said that when Russia went into Ukraine, it was brilliant.”
Despite the inaccuracy of these claims, ABC News moderator Linsey Davis did not challenge Harris, simply replying, “Vice President Harris, thank you.”
Trump has never told Putin he could “do whatever the hell he wants” regarding Ukraine. The origin of this false narrative stems from Trump recalling a conversation with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel during which he pressured Germany to meet its NATO defense spending obligations.
Trump remarked that if Germany didn’t pay its share, he wouldn’t defend them and would “encourage them [Russia] to do whatever the hell they want.” However, this was a hypothetical remark aimed at Merkel, not an instruction to Putin.
The claim has been repeatedly used by Democrats, including President Joe Biden, and was echoed again by Harris on the debate stage.
The suspect in the recent assassination attempt on Trump, 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was reportedly a staunch supporter of Ukraine.
Routh had traveled to Ukraine in 2022, hoping to fight in the war, but was rejected due to his age and lack of military experience. According to reports, he instead focused on recruiting former Afghan soldiers to fight in Ukraine.
Routh frequently expressed strong pro-Ukraine views, telling the New York Times, “In my opinion, everyone should be there supporting the Ukrainians.” He also told Newsweek Romania that the conflict was “about good versus evil.”
In a Semafor article from March 2023, Routh was identified as the head of the International Volunteer Center, which reportedly helped foreigners support Ukraine through military and humanitarian efforts. He also self-published a book titled Ukraine’s Unwinnable War, in which he criticized Trump, calling him a “fool” and a “buffoon.”
Routh was active on social media, often posting about Ukraine and seeking to recruit volunteers and raise money for the cause. He once posted, “I am going to fight and die for Ukraine.”
Video footage from 2020 shows Routh at a demonstration in Kyiv, holding a sign that read, “End Russia for our kids,” and visiting a memorial for foreigners killed by Putin.
Routh had also expressed an interest in organizing a “We Are the World”-style event for Ukraine, even claiming to have written lyrics and music for it.
