In 2019, Donald Trump, who was the President at the time, faced impeachment due to a phone conversation he had with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine. Despite this, Trump recently revealed that he had engaged in another call with the Ukrainian leader last week.
As the Daily Beast noted, Trump touted his conversation with Zelenskyy in a post made to Truth Social on Friday, writing, “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and I had a very good phone call earlier today.”
“He congratulated me on a very successful Republican National Convention and becoming the Republican nominee for President of the United States,” Trump explained.
“He condemned the heinous assassination attempt last Saturday and remarked about the American people coming together in the spirit of Unity during these times,” the former president recalled.
Trump further pledged to “bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families.”
Referring to Ukraine and Russia, Trump asserted that each country “will be able to come together and negotiate a deal that ends the violence and paves a path forward to prosperity.”
The president of Ukraine confirmed in a social media post on July 19 that he had recently spoken with Trump.

“I spoke with [Donald Trump] to congratulate him on the Republican nomination and condemn the shocking assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. I wished him strength and absolute safety in the future,” Zelenskyy wrote.
“I noted the vital bipartisan and bicameral American support for protecting our nation’s freedom and independence,” he continued.
Zelenskyy went on to stress that his country “will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror” and complained of how “Russian attacks on our cities and villages continue every day.”
He concluded by saying, “We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting.”
Just two days before President Joe Biden announced that he would not be seeking another term in office, Zelenskyy’s phone call with Trump added to the growing uncertainty surrounding the upcoming fall election.
