Former President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Friday, threatening to seek the criminal prosecution of Google for alleged bias against him in its search results if he returns to office.
Trump accused the tech giant of engaging in “illegal activity” by skewing search results to favor Vice President Kamala Harris and harm his own public image.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Google has been intentionally suppressing positive stories about him while promoting favorable coverage of Harris.
He wrote, “Google has illegally used a system of only revealing and displaying bad stories about Donald J. Trump, while only revealing good stories about Comrade Kamala Harris.”
Trump went further, suggesting that Google’s actions amounted to election interference. He expressed hope that the Department of Justice would investigate and prosecute the company for what he described as “blatant interference of elections.” If no action is taken, Trump vowed that, should he win the 2024 presidential election, he will push for Google to face criminal prosecution “at the maximum levels.”
Trump’s allegations of Google’s bias are not new, but his threat to pursue legal action as president has added urgency to the ongoing debate over tech platforms’ role in elections.
His claims echo concerns raised in a recent study by the Media Research Center (MRC), which accused Google of manipulating search results to benefit Democratic candidates.
According to MRC researchers, Google is “padding” its search results with articles from left-leaning news outlets, which they say are hostile to Republicans and neutral or positive toward Democrats.
In one example, MRC conducted searches for “Donald Trump presidential race 2024” and “Kamala Harris presidential race 2024” on September 6, 2024.
They found that while left-leaning media outlets like The New York Times and CNN dominated the top results, Trump’s campaign website appeared only sixth.
Conversely, Kamala Harris’s search results included similarly biased content, but with a noticeably more favorable tone toward her campaign.
MRC President Brent Bozell has been vocal in his criticism of Google, accusing the company of “blatantly interfering in the 2024 election.”
The group’s research also pointed to similar discrepancies in previous elections, including a June study showing that Google buried Trump’s campaign website in favor of President Joe Biden’s during the 2020 race.
The accusations don’t stop at search result rankings.
Google was also accused of censoring information related to an assassination attempt at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Breitbart News reported that when users typed “assassination attempt on” into Google’s search bar, the auto-complete function failed to suggest Trump’s name, instead offering historical figures like Ronald Reagan and Bob Marley. Google later claimed this was due to protections against political violence predictions.
In response to the censorship allegations, a Google spokesperson told Fortune magazine that no “manual action” had been taken to manipulate the auto-complete feature.
The company explained that their systems are designed to prevent suggestions related to political violence and that they were working on improvements to the feature.
As Trump continues to criticize Google, his campaign has made it clear that tech platform bias will be a key issue in the 2024 election.
Whether or not his threats to prosecute Google will materialize remains uncertain, but the debate over Big Tech’s role in shaping political discourse and influencing elections shows no signs of fading.
