Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, was hit with new criminal charges by the Justice Department on Thursday. This news came as a surprise to many people, and it is now raising questions about what exactly these charges are and how they may affect his father’s presidential campaign.
According to several news sources, the exact nature of these charges remains unclear but NBC News has reported that they are expected to be tax-related.
Hunter Biden has not yet been arrested or indicted, however, it is speculated that this could happen soon if he does not cooperate with federal prosecutors.
President Trump has already responded to this report by repeating his claims that Joe Biden was involved in corruption during his time as vice president.
While there have been no allegations against Joe Biden so far in relation to these charges against Hunter, this could easily change depending on what comes out in court proceedings and investigations.
The White House also released a statement on Thursday saying “The criminal activity alleged against Mr. Biden appears serious” and went on to say that “it underscores why nobody should be above the law.” However, some political analysts argue that Trump is only using this opportunity to attack one of his political opponents for personal gain ahead of November’s election.
Regardless of whether or not Trump’s motives are pure here, it cannot be denied that these new criminal charges against Hunter are significant and will likely have major implications for his father’s presidential ambitions going forward. It remains to be seen how things will play out in court.

In September 2020, Hunter Biden was indicted on federal gun charges, including one count of False Statement in Purchase of a Firearm, one count of False Statement Related to Information Required by a Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer and one count of Possession of a Firearm by an Unlawful User or Addicted Person.
According to ABC News, these events were preceded by an incident where his then-lover and deceased brother’s widow allegedly threw away the weapon in question.
Subsequent reports revealed that Hunter had admitted this online during a conversation with his family over inappropriate conduct in front of children.
Negotiations for a plea deal regarding tax-related misdemeanor charges and a diversion agreement fell through during the summer before the announcement of the special counsel.
In response, prosecutors declared that talks had reached an impasse and concluded that the case was headed for trial.
