Former President Donald Trump on Monday accused the Harris-Biden administration of “mishandling and downplaying” the second assassination attempt on his life this year.
The statement followed a federal judge’s order to hold Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old suspect, without bond in West Palm Beach.
Routh allegedly waited for Trump at his Florida golf course, where authorities say he intended to carry out the assassination.
Routh was initially charged with illegal possession of a firearm, being a convicted felon, and having a gun with an obliterated serial number.
However, prosecutors signaled more serious charges were forthcoming.
In response, Trump posted a statement condemning the charges as insufficient, claiming the Department of Justice (DOJ) and FBI were not taking the assassination attempt seriously.
“BREAKING: The Kamala Harris/Joe Biden Department of Justice and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on my life since July. The charges brought against the maniac assassin are a slap on the wrist,” Trump said.
Investigators revealed that Routh fled from his makeshift sniper’s nest near the 6th hole of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach after a Secret Service agent spotted the barrel of his gun and fired at him.
This latest attempt follows a previous incident in July, when Trump was shot in the ear during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
In that case, the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired eight shots before being killed by a Secret Service sniper.
Trump’s statement went beyond the assassination attempts, linking the incidents to broader grievances against the DOJ and FBI.
He accused the agencies of being biased and obsessed with targeting him through various investigations, including the Russia investigation, impeachment efforts, and the ongoing legal cases related to classified documents and January 6th.
“The DOJ and FBI have a conflict of interest since they have been obsessed with ‘Getting Trump’ for so long. It’s very difficult to trust the Biden/Harris DOJ/FBI to investigate the assassination attempts due to election interference and the fake cases brought against me,” Trump added.
He also criticized FBI Director Christopher Wray for initially casting doubt on the fact that Trump was shot during the Pennsylvania rally, calling Wray’s comments “disgraceful.”
Trump concluded by praising Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for stepping in to investigate Routh’s assassination attempt, expressing his confidence in the state’s ability to handle the case with more seriousness than federal authorities.
“If the DOJ and FBI cannot do their job honestly and without bias, Governor Ron DeSantis and the State of Florida have already agreed to take the lead on the investigation and prosecution,” Trump wrote, adding, “OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM IS CORRUPT AND DISCREDITED… LET FLORIDA HANDLE THE CASE!”
