Portage County Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski recently stirred controversy after suggesting that illegal immigrants should be sent to live with Americans displaying Harris-Walz yard signs.
Zuchowski made the comments on his personal campaign account, drawing both criticism and support from local residents.
In his post, Zuchowski wrote, “When people ask me… What’s gonna happen if the Flip-Flopping, Laughing Hyena Wins?? I say…write down all the addresses of the people who had her signs in their yards!”
He added, “Sooo… when the Illegal human ‘Locust’ (which she supports!) Need places to live… We’ll already have the addresses of their New families… who supported their arrival!”
The sheriff’s comments referenced the immigration issues affecting areas like Springfield, Ohio, and Aurora, Colorado.
Specifically, he mentioned that Springfield, a town of 60,000 residents, has recently seen an influx of 20,000 Haitian immigrants, which some locals believe has led to increased traffic accidents and rising housing costs.
Sheriff Zuchowski, who has held office since 2021 and is up for re-election, faced backlash from parts of the community. Some residents found his remarks humorous, while others lodged formal complaints.
According to The Akron Beacon Journal, critics accused the sheriff of voter intimidation.
One individual reported the incident to the Department of Justice, expressing concern about the implications of a “gun-toting man with a badge” seemingly engaging in doxxing.
Another complaint was made to the Ohio Secretary of State, requesting an investigation into Zuchowski’s statements.
One local resident told the Beacon Journal that the sheriff’s comments were aimed at “oppression, intimidation, and suppression of freedom of speech.”
Meanwhile, Zuchowski’s opponent in the upcoming election, Jon Barber, echoed the sentiment, arguing that the sheriff’s words amounted to voter intimidation.
Barber suggested that the remarks created the impression that the sheriff’s office might not protect those who held different political views.
“I certainly hope the sheriff’s office isn’t looking up voter registration before he offers to send people out, but people have a right to wonder about that,” Barber said.
Despite the backlash, the Portage County Republican Party defended Zuchowski.
A spokesperson called his remarks “artistic license,” reflecting a core belief that elections have real consequences.
“Our sheriffs are elected to stand for the citizens of the county, and Bruce Zuchowski stands for Portage,” the spokesperson added.
While Zuchowski has yet to respond to requests for comment, the debate over his post has sparked widespread discussion in the county, with many questioning the appropriateness of his remarks and the broader implications for his role as a public servant.
