Democrats are increasingly desperate about Joe Biden’s situation, with a crucial decision on his political future expected this week.
According to a report from Axios, many Democrats are pleading and strategizing for an intervention as Biden persists in the Presidential race.
They are urging influential figures, including the Obamas and congressional leaders, to convince Biden to withdraw by the end of this week.
Leading Democrats are pushing for Biden’s withdrawal in the hopes that he will endorse Kamala Harris as his replacement, thus averting a contentious battle for the nomination at the Democratic Convention in Chicago.
Axios reports:
If Biden were to endorse Vice President Harris as the nominee, she’d need time to ramp up and pick a running mate. And if Biden didn’t anoint, there’d be a frenzy among governors and ambitious Democrats to try to win the nomination at the Democratic convention in Chicago in mid-August.
“The sh*t is going to hit the fan on Monday when Congress returns,” a House Democrat told Axios. “People are scared about their own races. But they’re also worried about the country, and about democracy.”
According to reports, numerous House members are on the verge of publicly speaking out or signing letters urging President Biden to step down. These discussions are expected to intensify in the coming week.
A prominent Democratic strategist informed Axios that the only person seemingly unaware of Biden’s precarious political standing is Biden himself.
The Washington Post’s Sunday edition revealed that an advisor to influential Democratic donors believes that while a majority think Biden should resign, there is still a small contingent advocating for him to stay.
The article also mentions that individuals who are endorsing Biden publicly, under pressure from the White House and campaign, privately acknowledge that there is no viable path forward.
This news has gained traction beyond the confines of Washington D.C. A lawmaker from a swing state disclosed to Axios that constituents were fixated on Biden’s age during a monthly forum typically centered around local issues.
Axios highlights the attention on former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), as she holds the influence to advise Biden to step aside.
Last week, Pelosi’s stance on Biden’s mental acuity underwent a sudden reversal, as she had previously disregarded any concerns.
During an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday, she stated that it was a valid inquiry to question whether his performance at the debate was an isolated incident or indicative of more serious health issues.
“I think it’s a legitimate question to say, ‘Is this an episode or is this a condition?’ And so when people ask that question, it’s legitimate, of both candidates,” Pelosi said.
